| Este estudo foi realizado em reflorestamentos com eucalipto da V & M Florestal Ltda., em João Pinheiro, MG. O objetivo foi verificar o efeito da espécie de eucalipto cultivada, da idade da planta, assim como da vegetação nativa que circunda os talhões, sobre a densidade de sauveiros. Os dados foram obtidos dos trabalhos de pesquisa do Sistema Monitorado de Combate a Formigas Cortadeiras da V & M Florestal (Simfor), realizados em todos os talhões reflorestados com eucalipto, de diferentes idades, entre 1991 e 1996. A densidade de sauveiros aumentou a partir do início da floresta manejada até o terceiro ano de idade e permaneceu estável a partir daí. | The isolation and maintenance of symbiotic basidiomycete fungi living in association with ants of the tribe Attini has been hindered by the slow growth rate of these fungi and the presence of other microorganisms on the surface of the material which the ants maintain inside their nests to provide a growth substrate for their symbiont. In this paper we describe a method which increases the efficiency of isolation of these fungal symbionts by over seven fold as compared to traditional isolation procedures. | Leaf-cutting ants of the genera Atta and Acromyrmex (tribe Attini) are symbiotic with basidiomycete fungi of the genus Leucoagaricus (tribe Leucocoprineae), which they cultivate on vegetable matter inside their nests. We determined the variation of the 28S, 18S, and 5.8S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) gene loci and the rapidly evolving internal transcribed spacers 1 and 2 (ITS1 and ITS2) of 15 sympatric and allopatric fungi associated with colonies of 11 species of leafcutter ants living up to 2,600 km apart in Brazil. | The production and quality of eucalyptus plantations have been studied in areas with different densities of ant nests, being important to estimate losses caused by leaf-cutting ants. The effects of leaf-cutting ant on wood production in differents productivity sites were studied in eucalyptus plantations in the region of Atlantic Forest, Minas Gerais State, Brazil from 2003 to 2006. Data of plots of the continuous forest inventory and data of leaf-cutting ant monitoring in eucalyptus plantations were obtained. | Com o objetivo de identificar as espécies de formigas cortadeiras que existem na região da Depressão Central do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, de verificar sua predominância e distribuição geográfica, realizou-se um levantamento em 51 municípios. Foram coletadas 40 amostras de formigas de cada município no segundo semestre de 1999. A identificação das formigas e a interpretação dos dados foi realizada no Departamento de Fitossanidade da Faculdade de Agronomia "Eliseu Maciel" da Universidade Federal de Pelotas. | ABSTRACT: Task partitioning in eusocial animals is most likely an evolutionary adaptation that optimizes the efficiency of the colony to grow and reproduce. It was investigated indirect task partitioning in two castes sizes; this involves task partitioning in which the material transported is not transferred directly from one individual to another, but where it is dropped by one ant to be picked up by another.
